DOCTOR DOOM by Ryan Bullard

Wow, been a long time my friends, been a long time.

I haven't had a lot of time to join in for the past little while, and this week isn't that different, but I couldn't past up a chance to add a Doom. So I did a entry of Victor, doing what he does best, being an international prick. It's probably no secret to anyone who knows me that the Fantastic Four are my favourite Marvel characters, and they're never as good as when they're facing off against Doctor Doom.  Doom is an endlessly fun and fascinating villain, and over the years has grown into a character that can stand completely on his own, independent of his original title and enemies, then show up and be interesting in any corner of the Marvel Universe. It's a shame the Marvel film universe won't be able to use him because Fox owns the rights to him and those horrendous Fantastic Four films.

SWAMP THING by Ryan Bullard

So I'm a little late with Swampy this week, I just didn't have as much time this week as I would've liked. So what, wanna fight about it?

When I think of Swamp Thing, I don't really think of the comics character, instead I get all nostalgic about late night movies, junk food and vhs tapes. Swamp Thing brings back memories of staying up late watching campy, pulpy, schlock like Creepshow, Tales from the Darkside, and John Carpenter movies and many many others. In those way-back times when you had to rent them or be lucky enough to catch late night broadcasts. The Swamp Thing movies are pretty damn awful, but in that deliciously bad way, and I'm positive ol' Swampy had a hand in my endless love for misunderstood monsters and creatures of the night.

Halloween is right around the corner, and it's a great time to dig out old monster movies. Maybe give Swamp Thing another go after being lost in the bog for 30 years. I'm sure it'll be much more fun on an old fuzzy vhs though.

THE THING by Ryan Bullard

The Thing is definitely a favourite of mine, and I never pass up a chance to draw his ever-lovin' mug. Of course, he always needs something to clobber, which gives me an excuse to draw another character I can never pass up on - Dr Doom. I did this drawing pretty fast and scratchy, so hopefully you can tell what's going on. If not, it's just Ben handing Victor an average Tuesday afternoon humiliating defeat.

GODZILLA by Ryan Bullard

So I might be a little late with this one. Okay, maybe a lot late, but whatever, it's Godzilla. You'll wait for him if you know what's good for you. I had planed to do a more elaborate drawing for this weeks post, in honour of the King of Monsters, but I ran out of time. Instead, I did this version. You're welcome.

I've always liked Godzilla best when he's represented as a force of nature, rather than the sort of super hero, or even anti-hero he's often cast as in many of his films. As a destructive power of nature, raging for unknown reasons, with unknown motives, and no mater how hard we try, we just cannot seem to prevent him from showing us our own insignificance. I wish this Godzilla was better represented in his films, but it's a version that doesn't lend itself well to wrestling other giant monsters and space weirdos. As much as the kid inside me loves the insane monster fighting madness versions, I wish there were, at least, a few Godzilla flicks made for grown ups. I want Godzilla to be frightening again, like he was when I first watched the original as a kid. That monster was no joke.

LONE WOLF and CUB by Ryan Bullard

Adam's right, this pic is a great one for Father's Day. Nothing says father's love better than slaughtering hundreds of people and continually referring to yourself as demonic. While I've always been aware of it, I've never actually read Lone Wolf and Cub. I have, however, watched the Lone Wolf/Babycart series of films a bunch of times since I was a wee lad. Tomisaburo Wakayama will always be the true Ogami Itto to me. He totally looks more like a real, wild haired, angry dad than the manga version. I tried to mix both the manga and film versions to come up with one I liked for myself. I'm not sure how successful I was, but it was still a fun journey.. on the ROAD TO HELL!

THE AVENGERS by Ryan Bullard

SPEEDO ALERT

In honour of the new Avengers film opening this week, I've drawn a bunch of Avengers who are not only not in the film, but haven't been on the Avengers comic roster for quite some time. You're welcome.
No, Secret Avengers does not count, and neither does Young Avengers, they're not for real man.

Namor, Beast and the Vision. I miss these guys. I've never been a fan of the mutant/x-men angle for Namor, it robs him of his uniqueness and make him just another boring mutant in my opinion. Forget the fact he would Never follow Scott Summers or have the patience for any X-kids. I chose the short-lived, ghostly version of the Vision because, well, it just always seemed to make more sense to me than the loud crayola coloured classic version. Last but not least, I chose classic Beast. The reasons should be obvious, you don't need to hear a rant about the cat abomination thing that's supposed to be the Beast nowadays. Or do you.. ?

 Anyway,  here's hoping the movie is good!

HAWKGIRL by Ryan Bullard

Last week was a bit of cute overload for me, so I needed something ugly and violent and Hawkgirl was a perfect opportunity. I tried to find an interesting villain for her to fight, but DC in general, doesn't really have interesting villains (of course Batman is the exception) so I couldn't find one. I ended up just making up some rat men with jet packs and the rest is history.

I have to admit, I really don't care for the Green Lantern. He's nearly as boring to me as Aquaman (hi David) and Lantern books, or DC in general have the worst friggin' alien designs I've ever seen in my life. My gosh they're awful. So, needless to say, I wasn't looking forward to this week, but then I discovered these two freaks. Their weird, intergalactic, interspecies bromance moved me enough to give them a shot.

BETA RAY BILL by Ryan Bullard

Beta Ray Bill. I really can't describe the cosmic level of awesome this guy is. Walt Simonson had some serious balls presenting an insane looking cyborg horse beast that could take down a beloved major character in his own book (The Mighty Thor), and not only get readers to take him seriously, but to actually fall in love with the character for close to 30 years now. He's so deliciously strange, everything about him is weird, from his creation, his name, to the way he looks, that you just can't help but love him damn it.
