Here is my contribution to the Planet of the apes pick. I was always a fan of the movies. When I was a kid, I sat through a LONG run of the entire series at the time. Featuring Planet of the Apes, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and last but not least Battle for the Planet of the Apes. The Beneath the planet of the apes was the one that was most memorable to me though. The whole missile as a god thing? So cool.

Anyways, I have to say I was BLOWN AWAY by the "Rise of" movie. I can't tell you how amazing I felt that it was. Anyways, I hope i just did some justice to the movie.

Really cool pick from Ryan. I was originally going to do something from the original movie but ultimately went with Citizen Aleron from the new Betrayal of the Planet of the Apes comic (which is fantastic by the way).

One a side note, stay tuned because there may be a colour version of this going up at a later date by a guest baller'.

NOTE: Adam Metcalfe laid down some truly unbelievable colours on my apes piece and I just had to post it.

Doing something I wouldn't normally do here, but we've all been getting really busy lately and I wanted to keep the post numbers up. This is a bat photo of a Batman Beyond con sketch I did over the weekend. Also it's off model. Also I hate you.

I've loved Batman Beyond since the previews for it started airing in the fall of 98. Still, every time I think of Batman Beyond I think of the commercial YTV ran for it sometime in the middle of its run, when YTV seemed to think it was keen to advertise their shows by making fun of them. Here's the little ditty they wrote for Terry McGinnis, to the tune of Camptown Races:

Wish I could find a clip to it because there was more to it than that ("Batman's got a jeeeet"). Track it down for me, friends.

I was originally going to bow out of this week, but due to the encouragement of my fellow Ballers' I decided to stay in and I'm glad I did. I havent done my grey tones traditionally with ink for a long time and thought this was a perfect piece to try it out. Had a lot of fun and ruined a pair of jeans in the process.

I've read the first trade of this series and really loved it, especially Rafael Albuquerque's art. Check it out if you haven't yet.

Skinner Sweet, the outlaw cowboy vampire from "American Vampire", is definitely the bad guy you end up rooting for. Described as cunning, ruthless and rattlesnake mean, he's the first vampire conceived on American soil but, unlike his European counterparts, he's actually powered by the sun (I lifted this right from the dust jacket -- couldn't have said it any better)!

It's such a fun read and I really was just looking for an excuse to draw the charming s.o.b.

Emma Frost and Scott Summers are, to me, the Brad & Angelina of the Marvel Universe (which would make Jean Grey their Jennifer Aniston, right?).

I still haven't gotten over my disappointment of January Jones' wooden portrayal of Emma Frost in "X-Men: First Class"; the only blemish in an otherwise awesome movie! Here's hoping that they cast someone who can actually act and emote for the sequels.

Another character I don't really know much about; pointy hood, furry boots and gloves, icicle-themed tunic. Honestly, I wouldn't be too worried about a guy in that outfit until he starts waving that cold gun and freezing his victims so they stay conscious and feeling all that pain!

If the Flash has a failing for me (and he does) it's that you really ended up rooting for his badguys. Flash is this nigh omnipotent force of nature and his rogues are just regular working class joes with magic guns and what have you. Captain Cold is like a Batman-league villain who said eff this, I'm going to go fight some gods. Cold doesn't care whether you're Nightwing or Superman, he's going to put on his fluffy blue parka and rob a bank in your town. It's impossible not be in his corner. Dude's got bills to pay.

Trying some new stuff with rendering and what not lately to varying degrees of success and failure. Not sure what I think but Cold's fun to draw no matter how I black spot him.

So, needless to say, I wasn't looking forward to this week, but then I discovered these two freaks. Their weird, intergalactic, interspecies bromance moved me enough to give them a shot.

When I was but a lad in the mid 90s, just getting into the DCU after years of Spider-Man collecting, Kyle Rayner was the only Green Lantern. He's still the only Green Lantern in my heart. O Kyle, O Wally... once you had it all.

I always thought Kyle should have been played in a movie by the kid who glued quarters to the floor in Empire Records. He doesn't have to explain his art to you.

Green Lantern Corps is a funny thing, in my mind I really like the concept and the characters but in reality I have barely read any of the actual comics. I think my favourite GL has to be Guy Gardner but I thought I would try someone I haven't drawn before.

I wasn't a huge fan of the GL film but I thought Mark Strong's portrayal of Sinestro was by far the highlight.

Beta Ray Bill. I really can't describe the cosmic level of awesome this guy is. Walt Simonson had some serious balls presenting an insane looking cyborg horse beast that could take down a beloved major character in his own book (The Mighty Thor), and not only get readers to take him seriously, but to actually fall in love with the character for close to 30 years now. He's so deliciously strange, everything about him is weird, from his creation, his name, to the way he looks, that you just can't help but love him damn it.

I wasn't too familiar with Beta Ray Bill, but reading that he's the last of a race that was wiped out by Galactus was what inspired this.

Hey all, I have to say, I've been a bit LoZ fan for my whole life. Playing the GB titles, and all the big ones like Ocarina of time and everything. One thing I havent seen Link do, is fight on the side of a large scale battle for the safety of Hyrule. He is always one lone guy, on and adventure to save the world. Why not have him at the battle front. Maybe as someone helping a general, fighting off waves of baddies! Think about it! Riding Epona, or some other horse into a huge wall of Moblins, Lizalfos and Stalfos. With Gorons, Hyrulians, and Zoras fighting side by side.

Meh, but it won't happen, anyways, enjoy the pic!

I picked Link this week mostly in celebration of Skyword Sword coming out. Unfortunately I still havent got to play the game because I'm kind of addicted to Skyrim, and want to finish my playthrough.

Anyways here is my Link, he's one of my favourite characters of all time and I've played almost every Zelda game all the way through. Went for an adult Link circa Twilight Princess. Loved drawing this character and am working on a colour version of this illustration (just not sure if it will be successful).

Check back in the next few days and hopefully the colour version will be up instead.

I was kind of excited when the Gotham City Christmas idea was suggested awhile back; I had my idea right away but fell behind in deadlines and had to put it aside. Being the procrastinating artist that I am, I couldn't put as much time into this as I would've liked (I really want to fix Harley's face to convey that she's going in for a big Christmas kiss -- I just don't get that from what I drew).

Confession time: the pose is based off this guy's photo since I was pressed for time to do any thumbnails (warning: NSFW); I really liked the playfulness of the models and felt it suited Harley and Ivy's relationship. The colour scheme was based off this guy's work; I liked the minimalism and the colour choices seemed appropriate for the occasion-- he's an ok artist, I guess.

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and here's to a Happy New Year!

This week's pick is Martian Manhunter, a dedication to my lovely woman, Sarah

This is the first character that my miss fell for in comics. Darwyn Cooke's version of Martian Manhunter is the character that she connected with the most, and the character she continued to love. With good reason. He's strong, and kind, but also sensitive. He has so much more depth than some of the others in his group and yet you still never see anything of him in the comics.

I had to dedicate this to my wonderful better half, due to the fact that she has helped me through so much of discovering who I am, with my art, and as a person. I am a stronger artist, and person because of her. She is my inspiration.

Sarah you are the best thing ever!

J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter. I actually like his new costume; the old one (boyshorts, pirate boots, x-suspenders and a cape... really?!!) just didn't make any sense to me. It always looked like J'onn was either heading out to a rave or hopping onto a Pride Parade float.

This sketch is dedicated to Sarah, Neil's better half. Her pleas that Neil's Martian Manhunter costume can be worn throughout the year (especially date night!) and not just on Hallowe'en, have always fallen on deaf ears.

I love the man Martian J'onn J'onzz. He has such a cool simple design, I especially liked him in Grant Mo's Earth 2 when he completely dominated the alternate Superman. He always seemed like such a forlorn, lonely martian so I tried to capture a bit of that.

Also, shout out to Neils' gal who absolutely loves this character, and with good reason.

Edit: Adam Metcalfe decided to throw some beautiful color over this image, It is now titled "It even rains in space."

Here's a quicky crayon job, liked the sadness in this one.

I can't say I know much about the character, although I have seen the comics before and they do look gorgeous.

I hadn't initially planned on fitting a post in this week... but the colour palette for Sky Doll really appealed to me so I thought I would give it a shot.

Sky Doll is just a treat for the eyes, simple as that (I'm talking about the comic book here though Noa, a so-called Sky Doll, isn't hard to look at either).

I'm happier with my pencils than I am with the coloured version but what else is new?

Ho man I never had so fun much drawing lightning! Storm is one of the coolest female characters I know in Marvel. She's a power house and doesn't really get acknowledged enough for it. Also, in general I kind of favor young characters with white hair.

I like Storm a lot. I think she's swell. I'd put her on my X-Men dream team. They falsely teased a Storm/Cyclops relationship on a recent Astonishing X-Men cover. Missed opportunity for a really fun will they won't they given both heroes are in pretty solid relationships anyway. I just want to see Ororo and Emma throw down.

The feeling I stole this composition or color pallet from someone else's drawing of Storm is strong with this one. I still like it though.

I'd finished the bulk of this piece last night and wanted a night's rest before I added the highlights. So imagine my surprise when I saw that my composition mirrored that of Mr. Walsh's (kinda like showing up to a party and seeing someone else wearing the same dress -- embarrassing! amiright, fellas?).

Trust me, this was pure coincidence.

I really had no strong feelings about Storm until the X-Men's run-in with the Morlocks. Her new punk look and the way she kicked Callisto's ass sans her weather powers really made an impression on me. Plus, it didn't hurt that Paul Smith was entrusted with the art chores on the book (so good it makes my eyes rain!).

I was initially going to colour this but I really think the black and white turned out well and I didn't want to take away from it. As for the character herself, I think Storm is probably my favourite Marvel woman. I couldn't resist drawing her punker incarnation, just so fun to draw.

I watched Teen Titans pretty regularly when it was airing, and it remains my sole exposure to Teen Titans as a whole, so as far as I'm concerned his name IS Beast Boy, and this is the only costume he's ever worn.

Anyway, this illustration is pretty simple, BB is all attitude and his shadow reflects his power. I read somewhere that Pteranodon was one of his favourite forms in the show, so I went with that.

Upon taking a second glance, my Beast Boy came out slightly more feral than the Gar we're all accustomed to.

And yes, that is the Thundercats Lion-O glove that he's sporting. :-)

Hey guys! Long time no post, sorry about that. October was a hell of a month for me, but I should be back on schedule and posting regularly for the foreseeable future.

While I was aware of The Rocketeer, I wasn't really familiar with anything about it other than "oh it's that guy with a cool helmet and a jetpack and his girlfriend is Bettie Page spelt with a 'y'" so I had to do some research before starting on this. I had a few concepts for the illustration, but settled on this one in the end since it seemed both atypical and easy.

I was wrong about the latter.

For me, I did watch the Rocketeer as a kid, but that was about it really. I remember seeing the old movie and thinking how cool it would be to zoom around on my own rocket pack. I more than likely did zoom around the house afterwards, maybe with my favorite action figure zooming with me (Mikey of the Ninja Turtles). I would say that I did like him, and I have always thought that he was such a neat character, but I was never really "IN" to him. I had some real fun drawing him this time around. I tried to give him the respect he deserves. Hope you all enjoy, I know I did.

It's my pick this week and I've always had a fondness for the Rocketeer ever since my friends and I managed to score some passes for a preview showing at the Cinesphere way back in June of 1991. This led me to seek out Dave Stevens' comic which is just so easy on the eyes -- do yourself a favour and pick it up!

My version has Cliff Secord's girlfriend, Betty, donning the helmet and rocket pack because, well, let's face it, we all know my penchant for drawing cheesecake will not be denied! And I'm still on my cardboard paper kick, this time with red ColErase pencils.
